Recorded live on April 19, 1985 at 12 & Porter, Nashville, Tennessee.

Townes Van Zandt played to a standing room-only crowd in Nashville on April 19, 1985, when he recorded Live & Obscure at 12th and Porter. The show was billed as the return of the lost sheep of the songwriting fold. The rambling Texas troubadour did not disappoint his fans, peers, and colleagues that night or any other. Live and Obscure is a live album released by folkcountry singer-songwriter Townes Van Zandt in 1987. It was recorded at Twelfth and Porter in Nashville, Tennessee in April, 1985. Although Van Zandt had always been known primarily as a solo performer, by the mid-1980s he had expanded his touring band with the addition of Leland Waddell on drums, his brother David on bass, and Boston transplant Donny Silverman on saxophone and flute. The group was rounded out by Van Zandt's longtime guitarist Mickey. Listen free to Townes Van Zandt Live And Obscure Dollar Bill Blues, Many A Fine Lady and more. 13 tracks 42:43. Townes Van Zandt. Certainly Live and Obscure is not in the same league as Old Quarter or Rear View Mirror, but I would rank it as his third best live album on the market. Mickey White, the brilliant guitarist accompanying Townes this night, is said to have been unhappy with the mix, which is really the major flaw of the recording. Band Name Townes Van Zandt. His records were good, but to hear the man in the flesh was to hear the songs breathe along with his being. Van Zandt's Live at the Old Quarter, Houston, Texas is the first must-have. Backed only by Donny Silverman on flute and saxophone and Mickey White on second guitar, Van Zandt sails through the finer points of his catalog with a joy that never appears in his brutal songs of existential crisis.
