The vocalist and guitarist Shana Cleveland, a member of the Seattle garage-pop outfit La Luz, proves to be a deft player and a witty composer on her solo debut. Featuring a rotating cast of nine musicians who add a flourish of clarinet, cello, and Wurlitzer, this is a guitar album, not a singer-songwriter record. Neither particularly sad nor happy, Oh Man, Cover the Ground has a sort of ramshackle, neo-folk nonchalance that might not make much of an impact unless you're willing to slow down with it and enjoy it for the contemplative mood piece it is. Read full review. Shana Cleveland joins an ever-expanding roster in the folk resurgence of the past several years alongside artists like Angel Olsen and Sharon Van Etten. But before she can match the most recent works of those two artists, shell need to work on differentiating her songs. Although it wouldn't see release until 2015 when she'd already established herself in the national indie rock scene via La Luz, Cleveland's solo debut, Oh Man, Cover the Ground, was recorded in her basement in 2011. Casual, spontaneous, and lazily free-spirited, it's a record that makes its case on vibes and appealing atmosphere. Led by Cleveland's untethered guitar work and sleepy vocals, the songs unfurl in a gentle current of quiet introspection and unhurried examination. The collection, now numbering in the 60s, is drawn in subtle grayscale washes, with special focus on eyes and the way light hits, for example, Diana Ross' bouffant. They're drawings by someone who looks closely, studies detail and, by the simple fact of her attention, implies a deeper story. Whatever peaceful, burbling fount Cleveland taps while drawing and illustrating, she's returned to it for Oh Man, Cover The Ground, her first solo album. Oh ManOh Man is to the work of La Luz what Karen Os solo project was to the Yeah Yeah Yeahs: a clear landing pad for a rock star having sunlit-bedroom thoughts instead of spotlit-sold-out-venue ones. As Cleveland has explained it, this record is the soundtrack to being inside your own head all the time in the outside world. Oh Man, Cover the Ground Q&A.
