The Silent Corner and the Empty Stage is the third album by British singer-songwriter Peter Hammill. It was released on Charisma Records in 1974, during a hiatus in the activities of Hammill's progressive rock band Van der Graaf Generator. Other ex-members of Van der Graaf Generator also perform on the recording. The cover was designed by Bettina Hohls, ex-member of the psychedelic German rock band Ash Ra Tempel. Hohls also contributed to the cover of Hammill's earlier album Chameleon in the Shadow of. The Silent Corner And The Empty Stage - Peter Hammill. Neatly divided between one side of songs and one of moods, it twists from the immolating agonies of Moderne to the absolutely spartan Forsaken Gardens, but peaks with the sequence that runs through Red Shift, Rubicon, and A Louse Is Not a Home, each a tour de force of shifting dynamics, studio trickery, and ear-slaying effects, as well as some of his. The uneasy balladeer, the spectral presence Peter Hammill is at his early best on these four very different albums, presented again here in a loving remaster. The Chameleon In The Shadow Of The Night, his second album, is where Hammill's solo template was truly struck, creating a sound subtly different from Van Der Graaf Generator yet retaining all of their intensity, setting him out as a most singular of artists. Slender Threads is full of touching remorse, while German Overalls is on-the-road VDGG verite. Bonus track, Rain 3AM, is one of Hammill&apo. The Storm Before The Calm. Peter Hammill - The Silent Corner and the Empty Stage review: A refinement and perfection of the model established on Chameleon In the Shadow of the Night. Peter Hammill stamps his authority all over the album, and at the same time he wildly exorcises his own personal existentialist ghosts. The album, just like VDGG's material, is a very experimental one. Very vocal driven, the music matches the lyrics everywhere. There are a few instrumental breaks, but the vocals are up front almost all the time. This can easily be seen in the lyrics sheet. Musically ahead of his time, Hammill is clearly a master with words, weaving them carefully to fit his vision. More By Peter Hammill. The Calm After the Storm. Chameleon In the Shadow of the Night.
